Do I need to fast before a blood test? +
It depends on the specific test:
  • Fasting required (8–12 hours): Blood Sugar Fasting, Lipid Profile, Triglycerides, Insulin Fasting, Iron Studies, Gamma GT
  • No fasting needed: CBC, Thyroid (TSH), KFT, LFT, HbA1c, Vitamin B12 & D3, Dengue, Typhoid, HIV, HBsAg
  • 2-hour fasting: Post Prandial (PP) Blood Sugar
✅ When in doubt, fast for 10 hours. Drink only plain water during fasting — no tea, coffee, juice or milk.
Can I drink water before a blood test? +
Yes — plain water is always allowed before any blood test, including fasting tests. Staying hydrated makes veins more visible and easier to draw blood from.

What is CBC (Complete Blood Count) and why is it done? +
CBC is one of the most common blood tests measuring different components of blood:
  • RBC (Red Blood Cells): Detects anaemia and blood disorders
  • WBC (White Blood Cells): Detects infections, immune conditions
  • Haemoglobin (Hb): Oxygen-carrying capacity, iron levels
  • Platelets: Blood clotting ability — critical in Dengue
  • MCV, MCH, MCHC: Size and quality of red blood cells
Recommended for routine health checks, before surgery, or when you feel fatigue, weakness, fever, or infections. No fasting required.
What is a Lipid Profile test and how do I prepare? +
A Lipid Profile measures fats in your blood to assess heart disease risk:
  • Total Cholesterol — ideal: below 200 mg/dL
  • LDL (Bad Cholesterol) — ideal: below 100 mg/dL
  • HDL (Good Cholesterol) — ideal: above 60 mg/dL
  • Triglycerides — ideal: below 150 mg/dL
⚠️ 10–12 hours fasting is mandatory before Lipid Profile. Avoid fried or fatty food the evening before.
What does HbA1c measure and who should get it? +
HbA1c (Glycated Haemoglobin) measures your average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months — unlike a fasting test which shows only the current moment.
  • Normal: Below 5.7%
  • Prediabetes: 5.7% – 6.4%
  • Diabetes: 6.5% and above
Who should get it? Diabetics (every 3 months), those with family history of diabetes, overweight individuals, anyone above 40 for routine screening.
✅ No fasting required for HbA1c.
What is Thyroid Function Test (TSH, T3, T4)? +
Thyroid tests measure how well your thyroid gland is working:
  • TSH: Most important marker. High TSH = Hypothyroidism. Low TSH = Hyperthyroidism.
  • Free T3 & T4: Active thyroid hormones — checked when TSH is abnormal
Normal TSH range: 0.4 – 4.0 mIU/L. Thyroid disorders are 5–8x more common in women.
✅ No fasting required. Can be done any time of day.
What are Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D3 tests? +
Among the most commonly deficient vitamins in India:
  • Vitamin B12: Essential for nerve function, brain health, and red blood cell formation. Deficiency causes weakness, tingling, memory problems. Normal: 200–900 pg/mL
  • Vitamin D3 (25-OH): Critical for bone health, immunity, and mood. Deficiency is very common in Indians. Normal: 30–100 ng/mL
✅ No fasting required. Can be tested any time.
What is Kidney Function Test (KFT)? +
KFT checks how well your kidneys filter waste from your blood:
  • Creatinine: Main waste product — elevated levels suggest kidney damage
  • BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen): Measures nitrogen from protein breakdown
  • Uric Acid: High levels cause gout and kidney stones
  • eGFR: Overall kidney efficiency score
  • Electrolytes: Sodium, Potassium, Chloride — fluid balance
What is Liver Function Test (LFT)? +
LFT checks health of your liver by measuring enzymes and proteins:
  • SGPT / ALT: Most specific to liver damage — elevated in hepatitis, fatty liver
  • SGOT / AST: Elevated in liver disease or heart attack
  • Bilirubin: High levels cause jaundice
  • Albumin: Protein made by liver — low in liver disease
  • ALP: Elevated in bile duct problems
⚠️ Avoid alcohol 24 hours before LFT. 10–12 hours fasting recommended.
What are Cancer Marker (Tumour Marker) tests? +
Tumour markers are proteins produced by cancer cells or by the body in response to cancer:
  • PSA: Prostate cancer screening in men
  • CA-125: Ovarian cancer monitoring in women
  • AFP: Liver and testicular cancer
  • CEA: Colon, lung, breast cancer
  • CA 19-9: Pancreatic and bile duct cancer
⚠️ Elevated markers don't always mean cancer — benign conditions can also raise them. Always consult your doctor for interpretation.
How long does it take for blood test results? +
Most routine blood tests are ready within 4–6 hours of sample collection:
  • CBC, Blood Sugar, ESR — 2–4 hours

How do I collect a urine sample correctly? +
For accurate results, follow these steps:
  • Collect first morning urine — most concentrated, best results
  • Clean the genital area with plain water first
  • Discard the first few drops, then collect midstream urine in the sterile container
  • Fill at least 10–20 ml
  • Close tightly and bring to lab within 1–2 hours
✅ Women: Avoid collecting during menstruation as blood can contaminate the sample.
What does Urine Routine & Microscopy (R&M) test check? +
Urine R&M is a complete urine examination covering:
  • Physical: Colour, appearance, odour, specific gravity
  • Chemical: pH, Protein, Glucose, Ketones, Blood, Bilirubin, Nitrite
  • Microscopic: RBCs, WBCs, Casts, Crystals, Bacteria, Yeast cells
Detects UTI, kidney disease, diabetes, liver problems, and dehydration.
What is Urine Culture & Sensitivity test? +
A Urine Culture:
  • Identifies the specific bacteria causing a urinary infection
  • Sensitivity test shows which antibiotics will work against it
  • Results take 48–72 hours as bacteria need time to grow
Essential for recurrent UTIs, burning/pain during urination, fever with urinary symptoms, or failed antibiotic treatments.
✅ Do NOT start antibiotics before collecting the sample — it can give false negative results.
What is Urine Microalbumin test? +
Urine Microalbumin detects very small amounts of albumin (protein) that should not normally appear in urine. It is an early warning sign of kidney damage from diabetes or high blood pressure — often detectable years before obvious kidney disease.
✅ Every diabetic patient should test urine microalbumin annually. First morning urine preferred. No fasting required.
What is a 24-Hour Urine Collection test? +
Measures substances excreted over an entire day for a more accurate picture. Common uses: protein loss, creatinine clearance, oxalate levels (kidney stone risk), hormone levels (Cortisol, Catecholamines).

How to collect: Start with an empty bladder (discard first morning void). Collect ALL urine for exactly 24 hours. Store in cool place. Bring to lab at end of 24 hours.
⚠️ Missing even a single void makes the test inaccurate — the collection must be complete.

Stool Tests 4 questions
How do I collect a stool sample for testing? +
Proper collection is critical for accurate results:
  • Use the sterile container provided by the lab
  • Defecate onto a clean, dry surface — NOT into the toilet bowl
  • Use the spoon inside the container lid to collect from different parts of the stool
  • Fill to about 1/3rd of the container
  • Bring to lab within 2 hours
  • Do not mix with urine or water
⚠️ Never collect from toilet bowl — water and toilet cleaners contaminate the sample.
What does Stool Routine Examination check? +
Stool Routine (Stool R/E or Stool Microscopy) examines:
  • Physical: Colour, consistency, blood, mucus
  • Microscopic: Parasite eggs and cysts, RBCs, WBCs, fat globules, undigested food
Conditions detected: Amoebic dysentery, Giardiasis, Roundworm, Tapeworm, E. coli infection.
What is Stool Occult Blood (FOB) test? +
FOB test detects hidden (invisible) blood in stool to screen for:
  • Colorectal cancer (one of the most common cancers)
  • Peptic ulcers, polyps, inflammatory bowel disease
  • Unexplained anaemia
Preparation: Avoid red meat, NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen), iron supplements, and Vitamin C for 3 days before collection.
✅ Recommended annually for everyone above 50 years as a cancer screening measure.
What is Stool Culture test? +
Stool Culture identifies the specific bacteria causing diarrhoea, dysentery, or food poisoning. Common pathogens detected: Salmonella (Typhoid), Shigella, Campylobacter, E. coli O157:H7, Cholera. Results take 48–72 hours. The sensitivity part shows which antibiotic will treat the infection effectively.
